Club Activities

The core of our Barnstable Newcomers Club is ongoing activities which are organized and coordinated by volunteers from the club membership.  We encourage everyone to join at least one of the activities listed below in order to enjoy the social interaction and fun that comes with participation.
If you have an interest in an activity, sign-up sheets are available on clipboards at the monthly meetings from which the Activity Coordinator will contact you, or you can contact the Coordinator directly at any time. The Club will happily assist any member develop and coordinate a new activity anytime if there is sufficient interest.  Please feel free to discuss a proposed new activity with any officer of the Club.

Ongoing Activities

BICYCLING –Bike Rides along various Cape Cod routes.

BOOK CLUB
- Four book discussion groups hold monthly meetings throughout the year in members’ homes.  The maximum size of a group is limited in order to allow each member to participate in the discussion and by the number that can be accommodated in a member’s home. Target is eight some have as many as 11. If the existing groups are full, the club will start a fifth group when six members are interested.

BRIDGE (ROUND ROBIN)
  - Bridge players are welcome to our Round Robin (Chicago style) bridge 6 times a year, on your schedule, at your own home.  Pairs are partners; singles will be paired. We compile a list of those that do not have partners, and forward it to those interested.  Arranging whom to partner with is up to the participants. A schedule for the year is drawn up in September and an end of year celebration is held.

CANASTA
  - You may remember playing this card game with your grandmother, but we play American Canasta!  The plan is to play once a month, probably either Wednesday or Thursday afternoon, in players’ homes or possibly the Osterville Library.  Players new to the game will be considered (depending on the number).  Feel free to call or email the coordinators with any questions.

CANDLEPIN BOWLING
- BNC bowling league is ready for a new season and everyone is welcome. This is a coed affair and all talent levels are included.  It is a social event and those who wish may have a snack meal or beverage nearby. The season finishes in early May and closes with an awards luncheon.  New team members and substitutes are welcome

DINE-IN
  - This group meets in a host/hostess member’s home Saturday (usually the 3rd or 4th) of each month, beginning in September. The scheduled host/hostess will have two or three additional couples or singles and will decide who provides the main course, apps, salad, desert and beverages.  This is a great chance to get to know others in a casual, intimate setting, and good friends are made from acquaintances.  There is always good food and lively conversation.

GOLF CLUB
-This coed group meets on Tuesday weekly during the Summer for a low stress golf and lunch at a local course.

KAYAKING
– The Cape has many great places for kayaking including ponds, harbors and salt marshes.  Past trips have included Middle Pond in Marston Mills, Scorton Creek in Sandwich, Barnstable Harbor, and Centerville River.  This club typically has kayaking adventures three times a month from June through September.

MAHJONG
-
Mahjong is a game of tiles, played in groups of four that originated in China.  Similar to the Western card game rummy, mahjong is a game of skill, strategy and chance.

MOVIE DISCUSSION
- This group meets monthly from September through May on the 3rd Monday of the month. Typically we view and discuss contemporary movies.  Members make suggestions and the group votes on these choices for the upcoming month.  We currently meet at the Everleigh in Hyannis.  They have a very comfortable theater and we watch the films there and then follow with a lively discussion. Members bring drinks and snacks to share.  Differences of opinion are guaranteed!

PICKLEBALL
- This activity meets Wednesdays at noon at the town courts in Marstens Mills.

SOCIABLES
- This activity usually meets on the first Sunday of the month for brunch or lunch at a restaurant chosen by the coordinator.

TABLE TENNIS
- This activity meets Mondays at the Barnstable Youth Center.

TRAVEL CLUB
- This activity group is a new group which is composed of members who are interested in traveling together. This could be planning to attend an event together, going on day trips, weekend trips, or even cruising together! If interested in joining in the fun, sign the clipboard at our monthly meetings and the activity director will be in touch!

WALKING GROUP
- This activity is taking walks mainly around Barnstable. We walk on trails maintained by the Town of Barnstable, Barnstable Land Trust, Mass Audubon, Cape Pathways, etc.
We walk most Thursdays beginning at 9:00 in the warm weather and 10:00 when school starts. Normally 2–3 miles, give or take.
An email is sent out the week of the walk with location, etc. If you’re going on the walk that week, respond to the email!

Club Support Activities

The following people are so important to support the workings of the Newcomers Club. The coordinators of all of our activities are always in need of help, so please reach out if you can assist in any way! The best way to make friends and to benefit from the BNC is to GET INVOLVED!!!

PLANNING BOARD: Meets every month to jointly plan meetings, events and club activities.  All members are welcome to attend the planning meetings.

HOSPITALITY:  Our Hospitality Coordinate arranges for refreshments to be served at our regular monthly meetings. We are always in need of volunteers to bring a dessert to each monthly BNC meeting. To volunteer to bring a dessert or to help with refreshments, please fill out the sign-up sheet available at each monthly BNC meeting.

PUBLICITY:  Two of our members coordinate publicity for Newcomers events. They also work with Club members who belong to other organizations in the community to increase awareness of the Barnstable Newcomers Club and what it has to offer our residents. If you need publicity assistance, or would like to help, let one of the Club Officers know.

SUNSHINE:  If you know of a Club member who is ill, had an accident, or passed away, please let our Sunshine Fund coordinators know and they will send the appropriate card. We also make a donation from the Club to the charity of choice indicated by a deceased member's family.
