Barnstable Newcomers Club

President’s Message – Fall 2010

The Cape had a great summer – one warm (okay, hot) dry day after another.  The Club will follow this great summer with an exciting fall and winter program of social activities.

Barnstable Newcomers exists to help members meet others and eventually form lasting friendships.  The Club sponsors over twenty activities in which members join with others who have similar interests.  There is no limit to the number of activities available – the Club will support any activity any member wants to establish and can attract five other members.  Visit our website (barnstablenewcomers.com) for information on activities, speakers and schedules.

Any resident of the Barnstable villages can join Barnstable Newcomers.  There is no limit to the length of membership; everyone can be a “newcomer” forever.  New Club members do not have to be new to Barnstable.  Many of our members were long-term residents before joining the Club.  We also welcome members of all ages.  People who are not residents of Barnstable can be Associate Members if sponsored by a resident member.  We now have over 200 members and always want new members.  Club dues are $15 per person and are used to cover the cost of hall rental for monthly meetings, postage, and office supplies.

We have our general meetings at the Barnstable Senior Center on the third Wednesday of September, October, November, February, March and April at 7:30 pm.  General meetings start with coffee, tea and dessert followed by a short business meeting and a guest speaker.  Vice President Frank McIntosh has arranged an attractive fall 2010 schedule of speakers:

September 15 -  Dianne Langeland, owner, publisher and editor of Edibles magazine, which supports farming, farmer’s markets, aquaculture, and restaurants that support local Cape Cod farms and seafood. Dianne will address how this growing local food industry is a part of the special character of Cape Cod by presenting the Top 10 Edible activities on Cape Cod.

October 20: Jaci Barton, Executive Director of the Barnstable Land Trust.

November 17:  JoAnne Buntich, Director of the Growth Management Department of the Town of Barnstable..

Frank will give us other interesting speakers for our spring 2011 general meetings and will arrange the program for our always-popular May social meeting.

Current members should promptly complete the attached Newcomers Membership Form and send it with dues to our Treasurer, Jack Strudwick, P.O. Box 754, Centerville, MA 02632.  People who want to join the Club are welcome to send in their membership application or attend any monthly meeting.  Our Membership Officers, Phyllis and Paul Bushlow, are available to discuss the Club and its activities (508-681-8121).  You may also contact me as well.

All members, current and new, should remember that the Club exists to provide its members access to its activities.  Each activity needs a coordinator to make sure it delivers what its members want and the Club needs officers to make sure that the Club as a whole operates properly.  Members who participate in activities should take their turn as coordinator and some members must be willing to be Club officers.  Otherwise, the activity or the Club will die.  Each of you should be prepared to step forward when asked.
