NEW BOWLING LEAGUE BY-LAWS

NEWCOMERS BOWLING LEAGUE

BY-LAWS

(Revised 8/27/10)

1.     The league season will begin on the first Monday after Labor Day and continue for 35 weeks.  Bowling will begin promptly at 1:00 p.m.  There will be one 35 week season with position days scheduled on the 12th, 24th and 35th weeks.  Based on team standings before those three weeks, first place will play second place, third will play fourth, fifth will play sixth, etc.  Ties will be broken by total pin fall (including handicap) to date.

2.     The current average for individual members absent on position days will be used.  No spares will bowl on either of the two teams competing for first place on a position day.  Final standings are determined by the results of the last position day in week 35.

3.     Weekly dues will consist of the actual cost of bowling and monies for a Banquet & Prize fund.  Absent team bowlers must make up Banquet & Prize fund money on their next day of bowling, and will pay for all 35 weeks of bowling dues.

4.     The League will abide by the “Official Candlepin Rules & Regulations” of the I.C.B.A. for all rules not specifically covered in these By-Laws.

5.     Officers of the league will be the President, Treasurer, Statistician, Coordinator and Social Director.  These officers, the Executive Board, will be responsible for setting the bowling dues for the current season, appointing new team captains as needed, and making decisions on anything not specifically covered by these By-Laws.  The Executive Board, plus all team captains, will make up the Executive Committee which must approve any changes to these By-Laws by a majority vote of its members present at a meeting.

6.     The President of the current Executive Board will remain as advisor to the new Executive Board.

7.     This will be a 100% handicap league made up of twelve teams of five members each.  The Statistician will make up the teams using the following guide-lines:  team averages will be as equitable as possible, husband and wife will not be on the same team, and team membership should differ from the previous season as much as practical.

8.     Nine strings must be bowled to establish an average; therefore a bowler’s average for the previous season will be used until nine strings are bowled in the new season.  Scores of new spares will not be used until they have established an average.

9.     A minimum of one regular team member must bowl for the team score to count; otherwise the team will forfeit all points to the opposing team.

10.  When a spare is bowling with a team, his/her score and average must be used.

11.  When a bowler is absent and no spare is available, the absent bowler’s average will be used.

12.  Any bowler arriving after the start of the fifth box will be considered late, and not eligible to bowl that string.  A bowler arriving prior to the start of the fifth box will have the opportunity to make up the missed boxes, but not consecutively.

13.  A roster of spares will be maintained by seniority.  Spares will be assigned as a permanent team member as vacancies occur, in order of their seniority on the spare roster.

14.  A bowler who is going to be absent must notify his/her captain as soon as practical.  Captains should notify the Coordinator of absentees by telephone before 10:00 a.m. on Monday.

15.  Each Monday, the Coordinator will make a list of teams needing spares.  When spares report to the Coordinator they may be assigned to a team on a first sign in basis.  When all teams have five bowlers, the remaining spares will be randomly assigned to teams and will bowl for average only.

16.  Any bowler with suggestions or criticism should present same to his/her captain.  Any problem that cannot be resolved should be brought, by the captain, to the league President.

17.  Each captain is responsible to collect and record dues for team members and spares bowling with the team and for properly recording and totaling scores for each bowler.  Each captain should appoint an assistant to serve in his/her absence.

18.  All bowlers must be paid up members of the Barnstable Newcomers Club.

19.  All bowlers must bowl 18 weeks to be eligible to win an individual award.  The Executive Board may make exceptions for health reasons.  A bowler who has to leave due to sickness and cannot continue for the current season, but becomes physically able to return the following year, could return as a team member.

20.  A spare that has been absent will not be charged for the missing weeks of bowling.  If the spare is to attend the banquet, the difference between what he/she has currently paid and the cost for the banquet has to be paid.  If the spare has completed 18 or more weeks of bowling, he/she must pay for the absent time to be eligible for individual prizes.  No dues will be refunded.

21.  To allow spares an opportunity to share in team prizes, a lottery will be held on the final day.  The twelve spares with the most seniority, who have bowled at least 18 weeks, will be allowed to draw a team number and will share in any prize won by that team.

22.  Bowlers who are absent due to illness for 8 weeks or more don’t have to pay past dues.  All others must pay.
